2002 Season Review |
| PRESEASON
After awaiting the return of the team's engines from R&S Performance Centre the team have undergone some lengthy but necessary machine testing to fully run in the new components. With only limited time available Phil and Stu have had an afternoon session at the local circuit of Cadwell Park to complete this task. Stu's machine, plagued with an electrical mis-fire was sidelined for the most part as the team investigated the problem. After a day swapping and testing components at their local airfield the faults have been diagnosed and the team await the arrival of the replacement parts. With only a few days to the first round of the Derby Phoenix club championship at Snetterton the final preparations take place. Look out for No's 97 and 98 |

SP Racing set out on their
first meeting of the season at Snetterton after testing Stu’s machine and
finally curing it of a plaguing misfire at their local former world war 2
airfield. The problem had limited Stu’s track time in testing to virtually
zero. With freshly run in engines after winter rebuilds carburetion was a
grey area for the team, as time had not allowed for the proposed trip to
R&S Performance Centre to optimise. With recently married Phil (congratulations Phil) competing in an extra race to make up for lost time last season he finished a fine 16th in the first of the two 125 to 1300 allcomers heats to qualify for the A Final. |

For the first of the 8 lap
formula 400 races Stu took to row 2 with Phil slotting in one position
behind on row 3 for the start. As the lights tuned green Stu and Phil both
got off the line well and Phil led briefly out of turn 2 with Stu in third.
Both riders jostled for position at the Russels chicane as the pack
shuffled. As the laps counted down Stu remained in third in pursuit of
leader Daniel Williams and Mark Jordan in second. Tom Warner slipped past
with three laps to go, then Stu elevated himself back to third in pursuit of
Warner by passing Jordan at Sears corner. Phil scrapped with Richard Welsh
in 5th position as Stu hounded down Warner setting the second
fastest lap of the race in the process. Trying to grab a tow in his
slipstream Stu throttled his Kawasaki, squeezing every last ounce of power
from his machine when, whilst hooking 5th gear, his throttle
cable snapped leaving him stranded and out of the race. |
Phil, elevated to 4th, dropped to 5th on the drag to the flag after hitting a false neutral allowing Richard Welsh sneak through. Between races Stu replaced
his broken cable and both prepared for the second race. With finishing
position of race one determining the starting order of race 2 Phil lined up
on row 2 and Stu having dnf’d lined up on row 8 in 32nd
position. |
The shortened 6 lap race
ensued and Stu began picking off rider after rider and was up to 10th
by lap 4. After catching Phil in 8th position, Stu passed out of
Sears corner and along Revetts straight. Phil retaliated on the following
lap into the Esses and led the pair on the penultimate lap around the ultra
fast Corams Curve when his bike slowed suddenly. Phil began to run wide in
the turn as Stu attempted a pass around the outside forcing him wide. Stu
continued on to finish 8th but Phil was forced to retire after
his electrics failed killing his engine. The team looks forward to better luck at their next outing at Anglesey on April 27/28. Meanwhile preparations continue and the trip to R&S Performance Centre is rescheduled. |

After arriving on the island of Anglesey late on Friday night for the 2nd round of the Derby Phoenix club championship, the riders completed the short practice session before Phil embarked on his first outing of Saturday in the 125-1300 allcomers race third heat. After finishing a fine 8th and qualifying for the 'A' final the team prepared for the first of the two F400 races. |
| Stu and Phil lined up on row 3 with rival Tom Warner with Mark Jordan on row 1 and Dan Williams on row 4. As the lights turned green, Stu got a flyer and launched straight into 2nd position behind Jordan. Paul Mumby Croft slipped past but then clashed with Jordan at the hairpin and ran wide. Jordan's machine suffered damage to the exhaust system and Stu, caught up by his stricken machine led briefly for a second before being passed by local rider Neil Pugh, Lincoln's Dave Irons and Tom Warner and Hull's Richard Welsh. Pugh pulled away as Stu fought back past Warner and Welsh clashing fairings on the way. Phil, baulked of the line, battled back to 8th as Stu chased down Dave Irons in 2nd but ran out of laps to finish 3rd. Pugh took victory with championship leader Dan Williams in 4th. | |
A short shower dampened the track's surface before race 2, and Stu took to the front row with Phil directly behind on row 2 with Tom Warner and Richard Welsh. At the start of the race the leaders proceeded into the first corner with caution as Neil Pugh again began to make his escape. Dan Williams and Dave Irons set off in pursuit as Stu and Phil engaged in their own battle with each other and Honda mounted Tim Bradley. Phil led Stu until the end of the penultimate lap when Phil ran wide into the final chicane and lost drive onto the start/finish straight. Stu powered past and held the advantage into School corner and led until the flag to finish 4th with Phil in 5th. |

Round 3 of the championship kicked off on Sunday morning with the next race of the 400cc series taking the same starting order as the previous day's first race with the team's riders on the 3rd row of the grid. The lights turned from red to green and Stu again made a flying start, again slotting in behind Mark Jordan. Stu began his challenge immediately by showing his rival his front wheel and leaning on him at the hairpin before diving up the inside at the final chicane to take the lead. Jordan retaliated at School corner and led for a couple of corners before making a mistake exiting Abbots and running onto the dirt. Local specialist Neil Pugh again showed his form and slipped into the lead at school corner on lap 5 and Stu pursued with vigour. Stu then regained the advantage at the same corner on the following penultimate lap and stretched out a 1.3 second lead to take his first win of the season over Pugh in 2nd and Jordan in 3rd. Meanwhile Phil battled through past Richard Welsh and chased home on form Dave Irons and championship leader Dan Williams to finish 6th. An elated Stu said "It's been a while since my last win, i'd forgotten how good it feels. I like it and i'll be gunning for many more this season." |
After a heavy deluge of rain just after the first F400 race the track had time to dry before the next outing with Stu again forming up on row 1 with Phil taking his preferred spot directly behind fast starting Stu on row 2. Both riders got away well with Stu battling with Neil Pugh and Dave Irons. Pugh stretched an early advantage and Stu slotted into 2nd position as the 7 laps ticked past. Phil fended off Tom Warner and Dave Marsh and Stu, unable to bridge the gap to leader Pugh, was ready to settle for 2nd place points when he came across a gaggle of battling back markers at the Radar chicane on the final lap. Unaware of the blue flags warning of faster riders approaching they battled amongst themselves weaving across the racing line tripping Stu up. Championship leader Dan Williams seized his opportunity to pass on the run to the hairpin and Stu tried in vain to re-pass at the remaining 2 corners to finish a still impressive 3rd. Phil, chasing down Tim Bradley in 7th and Mark Jordan in 6th ran out of time to mount a challenge and had to settle for 8th. |
For his final race of the day, after earlier qualifying for the 'B' final of the 125-1300cc allcomers race, Phil took to to the front row for the start. With easily his best start of the day Phil almost grabbed the hole-shot against much more powerful machinery and settled into 2nd position into turn one. He dropped to 3rd a lap later but then held his own against the faster machines and remained in 3rd to the flag to claim his first trophy of the season. |
| Stu and Phil tested at Cadwell Park on Saturday 4th May in an afternoon practice session in early preparation for the next rounds of the championship to be held at the Lincolnshire circuit and will arrive on Friday 14th June for further practice before the meeting on Saturday 15 / Sunday 16 June. See you there. | |
| CADWELL PARK 15/6/2002 | |
| The team visited Cadwell Park on Friday 14th June for an afternoon test session in preparation for the Saturday/Sunday meeting, rounds 4 and 5 of the Derby Phoenix Club Championship. All went well for the first twenty minutes of the first session on track before disaster struck. Phil’s machine’s motor threw a con-rod, seized the crank and holed the crankcases rendering his machine useless. The full extent of the damage will not be known until the engine is fully stripped for repair. The pair shared Stu’s machine for the remainder of the test but would see Phil having to withdraw from the meeting. " I was sure that I could give Stu and the rest of the guys a run for their money this weekend but I'll have to wait to the next round now to show what I can do" said Phil. | |
Saturday’s Race 1 saw Stu on row 2, eager to make up for the team’s disappointment, with Mark Jordan and Colin Sleigh on row 1. The lights turned green and Stu made a good start and closed fast on the front row and swept into the lead around the first corner of Coppice. Stu pushed to gain an advantage but Ian Wright followed in tow and the two made a break. On the second lap Wright pushed past between Mansfield corner and the bottom of the mountain link but Stu regained the lead with a tough pass on the inside of Barn corner. The pack shuffled behind as Stu ran his own race at the front and pulled out a 2.5 second lead until the fast charging Dave Irons surged into second place. Stu maintained his lead to win by 2.3 seconds from Dave Irons with Ian Wright hanging on to 3rd with championship leader Dan Williams in close company in 4th. Phil, cheering Stu on from the sidelines, said “that’s partly made up for the disappointment of my engine expiring and is great for our sponsors who see us through thick and thin”. |
| After a bad accident in the 600cc class, through the unforgiving woodlands section of the circuit, saw the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire air ambulance having to attend, a lengthy delay ensued and the second half of the days racing programme was abandoned due to safety precautions and medical cover. | |

Sunday’s event and round 5 of the Derby Phoenix Club Championship followed as per normal with 2 races after the problems encountered during Saturday's event. The starting order of each race determined by the finishing order of the previous event. With Stu’s win in Saturday’s race he lined up on pole with Dave Irons, Dan Williams and Ian Wright alongside. Tom Warner and Richard Welsh lined up on row 2 with Richard borrowing Tom’s spare bike as Richard’s machine had engine trouble. The lights changed and Dave Irons took the early advantage with Stu slotting into second and pursuing with vigour. The pair made a break and after the first lap had a significant lead between them. “Dave got away well and I tried to go with him but he dropped me far enough back to lose the tow that it got a bit lonely in second spot. I just kept my head down and pulled out a lead on third place. I took a look over my shoulder after 4 laps to see what the situation was and eased the pace a little to cruise home as I knew there was no point risking crashing to chase Dave.” Said a pleased Stu. With championship leader Dan Williams failing to finish with machine trouble the championship chase was thrown wide open. |
The second race saw Stu again on the front row with Dave Irons alongside Jim Blackbourne and Tim Bradley who finished 3rd and 4th respectively in race 1. On row 2 Alan Armour, Phil Earl, Ian Wright and Ady Warrant also awaited the start. The lights changed and the entire front row got an even start with Stu slotting to 4th and Dave Irons in 3rd early on as Jim Blackbourne led into the first corner with Tim Bradley in tow. Dave Irons picked his way to the front and led onto the second lap as Stu picked his opportunity to pass both Bradley and Blackbourne on the brakes with a perfect block pass at Park corner. Determined not to let Irons get away as in the earlier race Stu set a new personal best lap time around the 2.17 mile circuit in pursuit but couldn’t quite get back on level terms. Irons led to the finish to win by just 1.8 seconds from Stu with Bradley in 3rd and Blackbourne in 4th. Championship leader Dan Williams, after starting the race from the rear of the grid after failing to finish the previous race and on a borrowed machine, failed to make the points by finishing 14th. “That was a great race” said Stu “a good battle and Dave didn’t have it all his own way in that one. I put in some good lap times and with the track is slower than it has been with the poor track surface on two of the corners I’m real pleased. With Dan’s bad result Phil tells me that puts me at the top of the championship. Not what I expected after the disappointment of Snetterton”. |

| Results and Championship points (after Cadwell Park 16-6-2002) | |
| The next round of the championship will be held at "the friendly circuit", Mallory Park on July 7th. The team hope to continue their recent success where Phil will be back in action and his machine repaired. | |
| MALLORY PARK 7/7/2002 | |
| Mallory Park in Leicestershire hosted the sixth round of the Derby Phoenix club championship with Stu leading the F400 championship by 3 points from Lincoln’s Dave Irons. Phil returned to the saddle with his machine’s engine having been rebuilt after the mechanical failure at Cadwell Park three weeks earlier. | |
Stu and Phil lined up for the first race of the day on the third row with Tom Warner and Ian Wright. Mark Jordan, a winner from last year’s Mallory Park races, took his position on the front row. The drop of the national flag started the race and Stu and Ian Wright got away well as Jordan made the most of his advantage to head the pack down to the first corner. Richard Welsh powered past on the run in to Gerards to slot into second as Wright made the early running. Welsh slipped past at the Lake Esses to take the lead and Stu passed Jordan to chase the leading duo. |
Phil, after being blocked off the line causing a mediocre start, battled through the slower riders on only his second visit to the circuit and made steady progress. Meanwhile Stu’s main championship rivals, Dave Irons and Dan Williams, were suffering worse luck. Irons failed to make the start and Williams crashed at the ultra tight hairpin while in pursuit of the escaping Stu, Ian Wright and Richard Welsh. Stu, running in third, planned to execute an out-breaking maneuver on Wright on the run to the hairpin only to have to abort the move due to yellow flags for Dan Williams’ incident. With the laps ticking down Stu again planned his move and passed Wright on the outside on the brakes at the hairpin on the final lap. Welsh fought hard to keep his lead as the trio battled to the flag and held on to take his first win of the season just ahead of Stu in second and Ian Wright claiming third. Phil, with some early race problems, was disappointed with 11th and looked to improve in the second race. With the mis-fortunes of his closest rivals in the championship Stu’s second place extended his lead in the championship to 11 points. |
After making a couple of changes to his machine between races Stu took to the front row of the grid for the second race alongside first race winner Richard Welsh. Phil again took to the third row and was in determined mood to make amends for his first race disappointment. The flag dropped and Stu and Richard made equally good starts. Richard’s machine won the drag to the first corner and Stu slotted in to second and began to apply the pressure. Stu sliced through to seize the lead on the second lap as Richard ran deep on the brakes at the hairpin. The pair continued their scrap around the circuit with Stu winning the battle of nerves as Richard pulled alongside on several occasions showing a front wheel in his attempt to regain the lead. |
Phil, running a much-improved sixth, was towed along by the leading pack and could see the action unfolding in front. Passed by Dave Irons on the penultimate lap Phil pressed hard to regain the place but lost front-end grip last time around the 115mph Gerards corner. Phil saved the slide but the front tyre regained grip too late and Phil careered onto the grass towards the surrounding tyre wall. Phil, pitched off the machine, fell, unhurt, out of contention as Stu lead onto the final lap with Richard Welsh still in close company. |
| Stu held off his advances and took his third win of the season to stretch his lead in the championship further. Welsh finished second with Tim Bradley in third as the leading trio finished less than one second apart. “Brilliant race with Richie. There was nothing in it all race long ” said Stu. “My celebrations were tainted by seeing Phil’s machine on it’s side on the parade lap but I could see Phil was fine”. | |
| With Dave Irons coming home in sixth and Dan Williams crashing for a second time at the hairpin, Stu’s lead in the championship was up to 17 points with the next round of the series returning to Cadwell Park on August 3-4. | |

| NEW RECRUIT | |
| SP Racing became a three rider team after the Mallory Park meeting in July with Ady Warrant being invited to join Stu and Phil in their distinctive team colours. Hailing from the same village as Stu, in his first season of racing, Ady has fast improved into a talented rider with guidance from the team. After a string of impressive results and lying second in the 'Derby Phoenix novice championship' Ady will strengthen the team's effort in their quest to win the rider's main championship which Stu currently heads. His first outing in SP Racing colours will be at Cadwell on 3-4 August. |
| CADWELL 3/8/2002 | |
| Rounds 7 & 8 of the Derby Phoenix club championship descended on Cadwell Park on the 3rd and 4th of August with Stu leading the Formula 400 championship by 17 points going into the weekend. Stu decided that good consistent results was the way to go as risking crashing could undo all of the hard work of earlier meetings. With Phil eager to make up for recent disappointments and new rider Ady Warrant riding in his first meeting with the team a great deal of interest was generated with the 3 machines in the paddock and on the grid. | |
Stu and Phil took to the second row of the grid for the first race of the weekend with Ady just two rows behind on row four. As the lights turned green, Stu's machine bogged down momentarily as Phil got a flier and headed for the front. Eager to make a break, Phil surged into second at Charlies corner and attempted to outbreak early leader Mark Jordan to take the lead at Park corner. Too late on the brakes, Phil began to lose control of his machine with his rear wheel rising to two feet off the tarmac before tumbling off and sliding unhurt across the kerbs. After another incident in the woodlands section of the circuit the race was prematurely stopped. The restart would begin without Phil who managed to ride his machine back to the paddock without a front brake lever. |
The restarted race saw Mark Jordan again make the early running before being headed by Richard Welsh. Stu moved to third with Ady chasing as Stu tried desperately to pass the defensive riding Welsh until Ady seized the lead with an impressive maneuver at the bottom of the mountain. Fast riding Ian Hallam pushed past Stu and Welsh along Park straight to move into second but could not catch on form Ady who scooped his first win in his first race with the team. Stu settled with 4th place points to extend his points lead over Lincoln's Dave Irons who could only manage 10th. "Great race and a great start in the team for Ady" said a pleased Stu. "Disappointed for Phil because he so wanted to get his weekend off to a good start, but we could see he was fine when the race was stopped. " |
After quickly repairing Phil's machine in the interlude the team lined up for the second race with both Ady and Stu on the front row and unlucky Phil beginning at the rear of the field. Another incident on the first lap at Park corner called a halt to proceedings and after a lengthy delay the race was restarted. Ian Hallam broke clear early and despite Ady's best attentions he could not quite live with the pace of the Ibstock rider but pulled out a clear advantage in second. Stu disposed of Ian Wright, Mark Jordan and Richard Welsh to chase Ady home in third and held off the ever present attentions of Dave Irons who finished fourth. |
Phil carved through from 36th position on the grid to finish an impressive 13th and gave himself a fighting chance for the next days racing. "Crashing in the first race really spoils your chances for the weekend" said a philosophical Phil. "Once all the fast riders have shuffled themselves to the front it's hard to make an impression on them from the rear of the grid, unless you're setting blistering laps and setting records in the process!" |
| CADWELL 4/8/2002 | |
Sunday's racing continued at Cadwell Park on the 4th of August with the riders lining up as usual in their finishing positions from the previous race. Stu and Ady on the front row with Phil on the fourth. With Saturday's winner Ian Hallam not competing the door was again thrown wide open for the spoils. The lights turned green and Dave Irons, Ady and Stu diced and swapped places running three abreast around the circuit. In a brilliant race, with no team orders in place, Stu and Ady scrapped tooth and nail in good clean racing with Irons until on the final lap, with championship points on his mind, Stu decided to settle for a clear 3rd place. Ady chased Irons to the finish and fell just short of his second win in a blanket finish over the finish line. Phil, struggling with machine set-up, left the track momentarily at the Gooseneck losing places and finished an eventual 12th. |
Race 2 had a little extra spice as an added incentive of prize money and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies in the Ken Barker memorial race. Dave Irons, Ady and Stu lined up on the front row with Phil up to the third. Ady got a flier at the start and Stu surged past 2 riders on the brakes at Park corner to take second. Ady pulled away at the front as Stu and Dave Irons engaged in their season long battle in second and third. On the final lap Irons slipped past into Charlies and Stu retaliated at Park and the pair ran side by side for much of the lap. Irons took the advantage into the twisty woodlands section and Stu knew his final chance was on the drag to the flag. Right on his rear wheel Stu lined up a pass on Irons out of Barn corner the final time and tapped on the gas early. The rear broke loose and Stu, with quick reflexes, rolled off the throttle just in time to save the highside despite being spat from his seat. Recomposing himself, Stu cruised home in third. "I was so lucky to save that" said Stu. "My rear tyre just gave up the ghost in that race and I'm just so glad to have not thrown it away". Ady won his second race of the weekend and scooped the Ken Barker Memorial spoils with Dave Irons second and Stu, for the second year running, in third. Phil battled home in 14th still beating the 1999 club champion Tom Warner. |

A great and eventful weekend for the team which saw Stu extend his championship lead still further to 20 points over Dave Irons in the Derby Phoenix Formula 400 club championship and Ady also climb to the top of the Novice 400 championship. With his great performance over the weekend and impressing a lot of people, not least the circuit commentators, Ady also scooped the Bikesport News Performance of the Day Award. A lot of interest was generated in the team over the weekend with the arrival of the new team member who more than proved his worth. With only the two day event at Croft Autodrome, Croft on Tees on September 28/29 and a further 40 points up for grabs there is still all to play for. Watch this space. |

The final round and championship decider of the 2002 Derby Phoenix F400 club championship descended upon the Croft Autodrome on the 28/29 September. Stu leading the series by 20 points decided to defend his lead and not take any chances and to put the pressure on title rivals Dave Irons and Richard Welch to perform to snatch the honours from him. New team member Ady Warrant was also joint leader of the novice 400 championship and aimed to take command of his series and, along with Phil, help Stu to claim the main title. |
The first race saw Stu and Phil on row 2 for the start with Ady directly behind on row 3. Stu made a cautious start as Phil and Ady tore to the front of the field and led for the first two corners. Ady surged passed Phil to lead and Phil engaged in a race long tussle with Stu's title rival Richard Welsh as local specialist Dave Alsop joined the battle. Stu, riding conservatively, kept rival Dave Irons in sight and relinquished just 2 points to his main rival finishing a safe 9th with Irons in 7th. Ady's great run of form continued with him scooping his 3rd win of the season with Dave Alsop 2nd and Phil, with his best performance of the season, in 3rd. |
Stu continued his safe and conservative tactics in race 2 desperate not to crash and disadvantage himself for the following days feature double length race for double points to decide the series. A good finish would see him well up the grid for the finale and force his rivals to perform. Ady and Dave Alsop battled for top honours at the front as Dave Irons slowly climbed the leader board and battled with Phil for a lap who tried to deny him his progress to assist Stu. Snatching 3rd on the final lap, Dave closed the gap in the championship to 12 points with Stu claiming more steady points and a third row start for the final race in 9th. Meanwhile Ady got the better of Dave Alsop at the front to win his second of the weekend and comfortably lead the novice series going into the final race and Phil came home an impressive 7th. |
| CROFT 29/9/2002 | |
With a healthy 12 point lead going into the final and double length race of the season Stu knew he just had to keep the pressure on Dave Irons and keep him in sight. Stu could afford to finish 5 places behind Irons and still lift the title. Ady gunning for a hatrick of wins would assist Stu with another win and the rest of the ultra competetive field including the 1999 champion Tom Warner, early season leader Dan Williams, Richard Welch, now mathematically out of the hunt, but still a thorn in anyone's side, Phil on his best form of the season and a host of local specialists would all play their part. |
At the start Ady made the early running building a healthy lead at the front as Stu sliced past Phil on the first lap and pegged down Dave Irons and shadowed him for the first 2 laps. Dave, feeling the pressure, had to advance through the field to the front if to have any chance of stealing the title from Stu. He began battling up to the 3rd/4th/5th place battle of Richard Welsh, Dan Williams and Clive White. Dan Williams crashed out at the hairpin on lap 3 elevating Irons and Stu up the leader board as the tussle continued. Stu then dropped to 8th but still kept Irons in his sights until in a desperate attempt to climb further Dave Irons crashed at the hairpin on lap 4. Unable to remount, the championship was Stu's. Fisting the air as he passed the pit wall in a release of tension Stu, now with nothing to lose, then set about a battle with former champion Tom Warner for the remaining laps. Swapping positions numerous times Stu eventually won the scrap to come home 7th. Phil, squeezed out onto the grass by 2 other riders recovered from rejoining the race dead last to battle back up to 17th. Ady completed his impressive hatrick and in turn wrapped up the novice championship and again scooped the Bikesport News performance of the day award. Richard Welch's 3rd position finish snatched 2nd in the championship from Dave Irons and Ady's late run of wins elevated him to a brilliant 4th in the series. "The weekend has been so stressful because I was so desperate not to throw it all away. Riding for finishes is not what I like to do but it paid off as the pressure was placed on Dave to do all the hard work. He gave it everything. A wave of relief just poured over me when I saw him on the floor and I knew the title was mine!" said an elated Stu. "It's been a brilliant season and not only has the team scooped the main championship but Ady has also claimed the novice championship. What a great start to his career with the team." |
